A young doctor, Alexandra Kendall, with a past touched by heartbreak, moves to Hartford, Connecticut to join the practice of a male doctor who is approaching retirement age. Not long after her arrival, while her colleague is away on vacation, she treats one of his longtime patients, 17-year-old Elizabeth “Buffy” Koenig, for a broken leg which turns out to have been caused by cancer. Buffy demands honesty and full disclosure from Dr. Kendall regarding her condition and prognosis; Buffy’s parents, Fran and Bud Koenig, are in opposition to such disclosure. As Dr. Kendall comes to care about Buffy, her professional ethics are challenged.
