Buy DVD of Premier bal (1941)
This movie is a charming comedy and romance (maybe inspired by Belgian novel ‘Le Carillonneur’, by Georges Rodenbach). All characters are sympathetic and we often smile to see the rivalry between the two sisters and the kindness of their father. The actors are all excellent. A funny and moving movie at the same time and a true lesson of acting and directing. This sort of delicious and poetical ‘marivaudage’ has unfortunately disappeared now from France. One of the best movies directed by the prolific Christian-Jaque. The French audience during German Occupation needed entertainment and loved this sort of sentimental stories making them forget for a moment the sufferance of this tragical period.
