Review:

GREAT! This movie kicks other horror movies’ asses. It has a great plot, with secrets that you’ll never guess. :) Esther is 9, and is adopted by Jon and Kate, who just lost a child. Once she starts to move in…things basically go downhill from there (in one part, things literally go downhill). The performances I enjoyed the most in this movie were by Vera Farmiga and Isabelle Fuhrman. Isabelle Fuhrman’s character Esther has a great Russian accent (probably since she actually is Russian). They built up suspension so you know exactly what the extremely clever Esther is capable of. Vera Farmiga’s character, Kate, is the one who everyone doesn’t believe. She is the one who thinks Esther is bad…which isn’t good, since Esther will take down anyone in her path.

Overall, ORPHAN was a very well done movie. 9.5/10 P.S. the fact that the movie took place in the winter was great to enhance the look of the blood and was greatly used later in the plot.

The Ugly Truth

Review:

So a girl is looking for love, a guy is looking for raunchy sex. Not only is this the basis of the movie, but maybe also the real ugly truth. It’s a very simple concept but how do you make a movie out of this? Some people would say that the movie industry is losing it’s originality when writing but if you ask me this worked very well. Not only did a laugh constantly, there were parts where I doubled over laughing. In fact I would see this 20 more times in theaters before I even rented Bruno to see it again, and yes I think this could be a movie where you watch it more then once.

Gerard Butler hasn’t really proved to me what he can do with his acting skill till now, and I pray that he does more comedic roles. He was the highlight of this entire movie and for that reason, he will be offered more in comedy. Just try not to think of King Leonidas from 300 when you’re watching it. Katherine Heigl was also good, maybe better then she was in Knocked Up, but still kind of same old Katherine.

Now before the movie started I told myself that I would seriously mark this movie down a few points if the ending was as totally predictable as I thought it was going to be, but after how surprised I was, I decided to go a little easier.

Conclusion: Girls, see it with a guy. Guys, pay for the tickets and you may get lucky after.

Grade B-

G-Force (2009)

Synopsis: The story is about a team of trained secret agent guinea pigs that takes on a mission for the US government. A specially trained squad of guinea pigs is dispatched to stop a diabolical billionaire, who plans to taking over the world with household appliances.

Trailer: G-Force Trailer

My Thoughts: This movie looks to be like any other talking animal movie. The 3-D should make it a little bit more exciting. We will see how annoying the talking animals get or if it will keep the kids and parents entertained for the whole movie.

Review:

I have to hand it Jerry Bruckheimer, is there anything this man can’t do? I never thought he could pull off a family animation film and he has without a flaw. ‘G-Force,’ Disney’s new animated 3-D movie experience is a wonderful and fun film that kids as well as parents can enjoy. My wife who is in her 40’s loved it and laughed intensely throughout the film, particularly, at Tracey Morgan’s guinea pig character ‘Blaster’.

The story is about a team of specially trained secret agent guinea pigs that take on a mission for the US government. They’re dispatched to stop a diabolical billionaire, who plans to taking over the world with household appliances. A bit ridiculous, right? Yes, but it’s made for infants.

The voices here are top notch, except for Penelope Cruz who seemed uncomfortable voicing animation. I always have thought that is a talent very different from being in front of a camera and not everyone will equate their on-screen performances with their off-screen performances. Tracey Morgan was the highlight, but it was Nicolas Cage who surprised everyone by changing his voice for the mole character ‘Speckles’. The voice was unrecognizable. On a interesting note, at a press conference, Cage spoke about how his kids didn’t know he voiced the character, and the same goes for all his work, because he wants to shield them from his celebrity. Essentially, he implied that his children have no idea he’s a big time Hollywood superstar and will do everything from them ever knowing. Interesting, huh?

The 3-D experience was the best I’ve ever seen, and I’m not just saying that. Kids are so lucky that this film was made for them and not adults. The director Hoyt Yeatman, a visual effects guru, personally told me that he finished rendering the film just last week. Are you kidding me?! Not to get too technical, but the reason for such an onerous task is the attention to detail. According to Yeatman, the rendering took years with several hundred people working on it. If this isn’t a labor of love than I don’t know what is, but it shows and we’re all lucky for it.

Overall, I thought the film was funny, visually pleasing, and the pacing was never dull or incongruent. ‘G-Force’ is made for kids, but parents are going to be pleased applauding right into first place at the box office. Funny enough, I asked Jerry Bruckheimer if there was a sequel in the works and he said, “If we fill the seats with happy customers, we’ll do another one”. That’s not going to be a problem.

Review Time: Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Most everything about the movie is different–the characters have definitely matured, Hooper’s score is better (thank goodness), the special effects have improved, and even the castle itself has a different feel to it…cold and covered in shadows. It’s a refreshing touch, though. The series NEEDS constant change, or else it would become quite stale…

There are many funny moments in the movie, and the hormones are definitely raging. But, relationships aside, there is also a darker side to the newest Potter entry. Dumbledore and Harry try to unlock the secret to Voldemort’s past. Harry must retrieve a precious memory from a long-lost friend of Dumbledore’s (an excellent Broadbent).

The last thirty or so minutes are marvelous. In particular, there is a scene in which Harry and Dumbledore must venture into a protected vessel of Voldemort’s soul…very creepy, very emotional…it was well-done.

Ending is surprising. Quite sad, really. I don’t want to spoil anything.

But it’s a wonderful thing to see how much this series has progressed. Epic is definitely a word that may be used to describe Half-Blood Prince. But I’m even more looking forward to the next two installments a must-see.

MY RATING: 5 Stars
