“The Greatest” tells the story of Allen and Grace Brewer, a grief-stricken couple whose family has been pushed to the breaking point by the death of their older son, Bennett, in a car crash. When a young woman, Rose, shows up a few months later announcing that she is pregnant with Bennett’s child, the Brewer’s are forced to take her in. At first, Rose’s presence threatens to tear the family even further apart but, eventually, her interaction with each of the Brewers proves to be the very thing that brings them back together.

Originally released as Liebesexpress, Acht Tage Gluck (Eight Days Happiness) gets under way when heroine Annie (Dina Gralia) wins a huge cash award in a typewriting contest. She uses the money to go to Venice, where she hopes to start her life all over again. Placing an ad in the paper for a personal secretary, Annie is quite pleased when handsome Kurt (Georg Alexander) answers her request. She’ll be even more pleased when she discovers that Kurt is an incognito millionaire. Robert Wiene, the man responsible for the surrealist classic Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, handled the directorial responsibilities.

Donald is caught in the rain while eating his lunch. He ducks into a restaurant for a cup of coffee, but Chez Pierre is a very ritzy place, and by the time all is said and done, he’s facing a bill for $35.99, and he only got a drop of coffee, and he only has a nickel. Pierre takes him to court, where this story is told, and is ordered to pay $10 or wash dishes for ten days.

Rat and Mole are called to the estate of Toad Hall by Mr. McBadger. The owner of Toad Hall, J Thadddeus Toad, has once again gone off and fallen into another extravagant hobby. This pains McBadger, who has been trying to straighten out Toad’s financial situation for some time. Toad is currently ‘rampaging across the country’ in a gypsy cart, pulled by a horse name Cyril.

After much scouring of the countryside, Rat and Mole manage to find Toad, and get him to stop for a talk. However, he refuses to listen to their lecturing, and proceeds on his way.

Not far off, Toad lays eyes on a motorcar, and he now has found a new ‘mania’ to become obsessed over: motor-mania. Hearing his ‘sputtering’ rantings, Rat and Mole manage to get ahold of Toad, return him to Toad Hall, and lock him in his room, hoping that rest will calm him down. However, Toad now completely obsessed, sneaks out of his residency.

Shortly thereafter, Toad is arrested for supposedly trying to steal a motorcar. At the hearing, Toad decides to act as his own attorney. Cyril is called to the stand, who explains that after escaping from Toad Hall, Toad met up with him, and on a journey the next morning, they spy a red motorcar, which pulls up to a tavern. At the helm of the motor car are a band of weasels who then proceed into place of business. Even given their sordid reputation, Toad enters the tavern, and talks to the bartender, named Mr. Winky. Toad quickly makes it known that he wants the motorcar, and is willing to pay handsomely. However, having no money, he decides to trade the deed to Toad Hall for it.

The prosecuting attorney still doubts this claim, and Mr. Winky is called to testify. However, Winky claims that Toad actually was trying to sell him a stolen motorcar. With this testimony, Toad is found guilty. His friends try to plead for a re-trial, but their requests are denied.

In prison, Toad sorrowfully regrets his foolish acts. As Christmas approaches, a visitor is allowed in to see Toad. Claiming to be his Grandmother, Cyril infiltrates the jail, and gives Toad an old woman’s outfit, to use to escape. Toad leads the police on chase first by foot, and then behind the throttle of a locomotive. Finally abandoning the train, Toad makes his way to Rat’s residence, where McBadger soon joins them. McBadger relays that he saw Toad Hall alight, and filled with Weasels. Also in their midst, was Mr. Winky, holding the deed to Toad Hall. This is proof that Winky lied in court, and Toad is innocent. However, to prove this, the group must get the deed back.

After sneaking in through a secret entrance in Toad Hall, the group go through a mad dash to try and retrieve the deed. Finally succeeding, Toad’s name is cleared, and it seems that Toad has reformed, finished with his mad ‘mania.’

However, no sooner do his friends toast their good fortune, than a resounding crash is heart, and Toad is seen outside flying an airplane.

The Wife Takes a Flyer (1942)

Christopher Reynolds, an American flying with the R.A.F, is shot down over German-occupied Holland and is given shelter by a Dutch family. Posing as the insane husband of the daughter of the house, Anita Wolverman, Reynolds convinces the German officer quartered there, Major Zellfritz, with the necessity for her divorce decree to be granted. After the court-hearing, Anita, goes to manage a home for retired ladies and, persuaded by Reynolds, tries to gain military information from the German Officer. When her former husband escapes from the insane-asylum his exploits are blamed on Reynolds. With the help of the old ladies and Anita, who “remarries” him, Reynolds escapes to England in a stolen German airplane.

The selfish, evil and wicked Barbara uses her beauty and seduces the weak Ralph, who falls in love for her. Caroline calls off the wedding and Barbara marries Ralph. When Barbara loses a jewel inherited from her mother gambling with Lady Henrietta Kingsolver, she pretends to be the famous highway thief Captain Jerry Jackson, recovers her jewels and begins a career of crime, looking for excitement stealing travelers in stagecoaches. When she meets the real Jerry Jackson on the road, she becomes his passionate lover and also a killer. Meanwhile Ralph realizes that he loves Caroline, but it seems to be too late for their life together.

The White Cliffs of Dover (1944)

The White Cliffs of Dover is one of those overlong MGM wartime films that everyone seems to have seen a part of, but no one can remember the film as a sum total. Based on a poem by Alice Duer Miller, the story chronicles the trials and tribulations of one courageous woman through two world wars. Irene Dunne plays an American girl who, in 1914, falls in love with titled Englishman Alan Marshal. At the end of World War 1 in 1918, it is painfully clear that Marshal will not be returning from the battlefields. Remaining loyal to her husband, Irene vows to raise their child in England. Played by Roddy McDowell in his early scenes, Irene’s son grows up to be Peter Lawford. At the outbreak of World War 2, Irene despairs at the thought of losing another loved one, but Lawford convinces her that his dad would have wanted him to answer his country’s call to the colors. While working as a Red Cross volunteer, Irene finds that she must tend her own mortally wounded son. Unable to save his life, she is grief-stricken, but is gratified with the notion that neither her husband nor her boy have died in vain. Like many films of its ilk and era, White Cliffs of Dover struck a responsive chord with filmgoers, to the tune of a $4 million profit. Watch for a touching scene between Roddy McDowell and 12-year-old Elizabeth Taylor; 19 years later, lifelong friends Roddy and Liz would be playing mortal enemies in Cleopatra (1963). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

A mysterious night rider, who wears a mask and rides a horse that makes no hoof-beat sounds, has been terrorizing the countryside. The locals call him “The Whispering Skull.” Texas Rangers Tex Haines and Dave Wyatt are sent to solve the mystery. On the way, they witness the shooting of rancher Lafe Jeffers by the Skull. When they arrive at the shooting-scene they find an odd-shaped rock clenched in Jeffers’ hand. Ranger Panhandle Perkins is accosted by Sheriff Jackson and a posse, and accused of being the mystery rider. Duke Walters and his henchmen,Joe Carter, Eilers, and Jake, attempt to lynch Perkins but Dave and Tex arrive in time to prevent the hanging. Later, Sheriff Jackson is mysteriously shot and his body taken to an empty-store building. Dave and “Doc” Humphrey discover he is still alive, but unconscious, and take him to a secret location. Ellen, the Sheriff’s daughter, arrives and says she had received a letter from her father stating he knew the identity of The Whispering Skull.” There is diamond-planting, a salted-land-scheme, a frame-up scheme and a land-grab scheme going on among the suspects which complicates things for the investigators and investigated alike

Leopold Kroner, formerly of Colby Enterprises, is released after five years in prison for embezzlement. Andrew Colby, claiming that Kroner has threatened him, hires lawyer Bob Regan as a secret bodyguard. Sure enough, Kroner turns up in Colby’s room with a gun, and Regan kills him. Then Regan, who sticks around to romance Colby’s secretary Noel, begins to suspect he’s been used.

Gilbert Archer, a Broadway gossip-columnist for a newspaper, learns that his best friend,a priest, has been murdered and one of the suspects is a pretty girl, Patricia Foster. In one of the bibles belonging to the murdered-priest, Archer discovers a code which leads him to the hiding place of a valuable painting. presumed to be the work of Leonardo da Vinci. Archer also learns that the murder was committed by persons anxious to get the painting, and he and Patricia are in danger.

Margaret Drew runs her trucking company single-mindedly, if not ruthlessly. The only thorn in her side is writer Michael Holmes who is writing a book on some of her tough ways. With no time for men, the effect an attractive stranger has on her at her sister’s wedding is unnerving. When it turns out this is the hated writer, she starts seriously to lose her bearings. Surely it can’t become Maggie and Mike?

Margaret J. Drew, who rules her family with the same iron-hand that she runs the family trucking corporation, learns that author Michael Holmes is preparing a book about her late, unscrupulous father which is bound to be uncomplimentary because of his piratical career. Plus, she is faced with a damage suit filed by Holmes because she had him arrested for kissing her sister, Vivian, at the latter’s wedding. Holmes tells Margaret that he will drop the lawsuit if she goes incognito with him to the Dare-employee’s dance. She does and inadvertently wins a jitterbug contest. Holmes unconcern for the money he is suing for awakens Margaret to romance.
